Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several design solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.

Vocabulary

Terms from the Middle School Science Glossary that come from this standard or from the released Grade 8 Science Test questions that assess it.

From this standard
  • constraint
  • criteria
  • criteria for success
  • data from tests
  • design solution
  • engineering principle
  • iterative process
  • iterative testing
  • optimal design
  • optimization
  • scientific idea
  • systematic process
  • test results
Implied by this standard
  • trade-off – implied by "one design may not perform the best across all criteria"

Performance Level Descriptions

Every Grade 8 Science Test question on MS-ETS1-3 is written to match one of the performance level descriptions (PLDs) below.

Level 1: Given data from tests, determine the similarities or differences between two design solutions.
Level 2: Given the similarities and differences between two different design solutions, identify the best characteristics of each solution.
Level 3: Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several design solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.
Level 4: Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several design solutions to identify the best characteristics of each design solution, based on scientific ideas and engineering principles, that can be combined into a new solution, with justification, to better meet the criteria for success.

NGSS Dimensions

Performance expectation MS-ETS1-3 was developed using the following elements from the NRC document A Framework for K-12 Science Education:

Science and Engineering Practices
  • Analyzing and Interpreting Data
    • Analyze and interpret data to determine similarities and differences in findings.
Disciplinary Core Ideas
  • ETS1.B: Developing Possible Solutions
    • There are systematic processes for evaluating solutions with respect to how well they meet the criteria and constraints of a problem.
    • Sometimes parts of different solutions can be combined to create a solution that is better than any of its predecessors.
  • ETS1.C: Optimizing the Design Solution
    • Although one design may not perform the best across all criteria, identifying the characteristics of the design that performed the best for each criterion is useful for informing an improved design.
    • The iterative process of testing the most promising solutions and modifying what is proposed on the basis of the test results leads to greater success.
Crosscutting Concepts
  • There are no Crosscutting Concepts linked to this standard.
