Analyze displays of pictorial data to compare patterns of similarities in the embryological development across multiple species to identify relationships not evident in the fully formed anatomy.
Clarification statement: Emphasis is on inferring general patterns of relatedness among embryos of different organisms by comparing the macroscopic appearance of diagrams or pictures.
Assessment boundary: Assessment of comparisons is limited to gross appearance of anatomical structures in embryological development.
Assessment
What assessment of MS-LS4-3 might look like on a NY state exam.
| Exam | Cluster | Question |

Performance Level Descriptions
PLDs communicate the knowledge and skills expected of students to demonstrate proficiency in each Learning Standard. NYS assessments classify student performance into one of four levels.
Resources
Examples and discussion of resources for the learning, teaching, and assessment of MS-LS4-3.
NGSS Dimensions
Performance expectation MS-LS4-3 was developed using the following elements from the NRC document A Framework for K-12 Science Education:
- Analyzing and Interpreting Data
- Analyze displays of pictorial data to compare patterns of similarities in the embryological development across multiple species to identify relationships not evident in the fully formed anatomy.
- LS4.A: Evidence of Common Ancestry and Diversity
- Comparison of the embryological development of different species also reveals similarities that show relationships not evident in the fully formed anatomy.
- No Crosscutting Concept is in place for MS-LS4-3
