The H-R Diagram (Hertzsprung–Russell diagram) from the Reference Tables for Earth and Space Sciences (ESSRT) plots the luminosity of stars against their surface temperature. It primarily supports HS-ESS1-3.

H-R Diagram from the Earth and Space Sciences Reference Tables (ESSRT): luminosity of stars plotted against surface temperature and spectral class, showing the main sequence, giants, supergiants and white dwarfs

What the H-R Diagram shows

Luminosity is given in solar units and surface temperature in kelvins, with spectral class (O, B, A, F, G, K, M) and color from blue to red along the bottom. The diagram shows where the main sequence, giants, supergiants and white dwarfs fall and places well-known stars on it, including the Sun, Sirius, Polaris, Rigel and Betelgeuse. Diagonal lines mark stellar size from 10−3 to 103 solar radii, labels along the main sequence give stellar lifetimes from 107 to 1011 years, and an arrow at the right shows mass increasing toward the top.

Regents Exam Questions

Released Regents questions that cannot be answered without this table, listed by exam. Each link opens the question with its answer key; the standard is the one the question assesses. The exams through August 2026 were given with the earlier edition of the ESSRT, which has the same table.
