Construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction.

Clarification statement: Examples of structures could include thorns, stems, roots, colored petals, heart, stomach, lung, brain, and skin.

Assessment boundary: Assessment is limited to macroscopic structures within plant and animal systems.

Performance Level Descriptions

Every Grade 5 Science Test question on 4-LS1-1 is written to match one of the performance level descriptions (PLDs) below.

Level 1: Identify the argument, from those provide, that supports the claim that plants and/or animals have internal and/or external structures that allow for survival or growth or behavior or reproduction. Spring 2026 · Q30 Spring 2024 · Q24
Level 2: Construct an argument that plants and/or animals have internal and/or external structures that allow for survival or growth or behavior or reproduction. Spring 2026 · Q28
Level 3: Construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction.
Level 4: Construct an argument using multiple sources of evidence to demonstrate that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction.
