Represent data in graphical displays to reveal patterns of daily changes in length and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky.

Clarification statement: Examples of patterns could include the position and motion of Earth with respect to the Sun, moon, and some stars that are visible only in particular months.

Assessment boundary: Assessment does not include causes of seasons.

Performance Level Descriptions

Every Grade 5 Science Test question on 5-ESS1-2 is written to match one of the performance level descriptions (PLDs) below.

Level 1: Identify a pattern from a given display of data showing the daily changes in length and direction of shadows, or in the length of day and night, or in the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky. Spring 2026 · Q3 Spring 2025 · Q27 Spring 2025 · Q29 Spring 2025 · Q30
Level 2: Identify the patterns in graphical or pictorial displays that show the daily changes in length and direction of shadows, or day and night, or in the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky. Spring 2026 · Q2 Spring 2026 · Q4
Level 3: Represent data in graphical displays to reveal patterns of daily changes in length and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky.
Level 4: Construct a graphical display, using data, to explain the reason for the patterns of daily changes in length and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky. Spring 2025 · Q28
