Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
Grade 8 Science Test Questions
Released New York State Grade 8 science test questions that assess MS-ETS1-2 are listed here by test and question cluster. Each link opens the question with its answer key.
| Exam | Cluster | Question |
|---|---|---|
| Spring 2026 Grade 8 Test | Quaking Aspen | Question 24 |
| Spring 2025 Grade 8 Test | Rust | Question 27 |
| Spring 2024 Grade 8 Test | Variation and Corn | Question 11 |
Performance Level Descriptions
Every Grade 8 Science Test question on MS-ETS1-2 is written to match one of the performance level descriptions (PLDs) below.
Level 1: Identify a design solution, from those provided, that best meets the criteria and/or constraints for a given problem.
Level 2: Evaluate a design solution using a systematic process based on whether it meets the criteria and/or constraints of the problem.
Level 3: Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
Level 4: Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem and defend the best design solution based on the criteria and constraints.
Resources
Examples and discussion of resources for the learning, teaching, and assessment of MS-ETS1-2.
NGSS Dimensions
Performance expectation MS-ETS1-2 was developed using the following elements from the NRC document A Framework for K-12 Science Education:
Science and Engineering Practices
- Engaging in Argument from Evidence
- Evaluate competing design solutions based on jointly developed and agreed-upon design criteria.
Disciplinary Core Ideas
- ETS1.B: Developing Possible Solutions
- There are systematic processes for evaluating solutions with respect to how well they meet the criteria and constraints of a problem.
Crosscutting Concepts
- There are no Crosscutting Concepts linked to this standard.
