Performance Level Descriptions

Every Grade 8 Science Test question on MS-ETS1-2 is written to match one of the performance level descriptions (PLDs) below.

Level 1: Identify a design solution, from those provided, that best meets the criteria and/or constraints for a given problem. Spring 2026 Question 24
Level 2: Evaluate a design solution using a systematic process based on whether it meets the criteria and/or constraints of the problem. Spring 2024 Question 11
Level 3: Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
Level 4: Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem and defend the best design solution based on the criteria and constraints.

NGSS Dimensions

Performance expectation MS-ETS1-2 was developed using the following elements from the NRC document A Framework for K-12 Science Education:

Science and Engineering Practices
  • Engaging in Argument from Evidence
    • Evaluate competing design solutions based on jointly developed and agreed-upon design criteria.
Disciplinary Core Ideas
  • ETS1.B: Developing Possible Solutions
    • There are systematic processes for evaluating solutions with respect to how well they meet the criteria and constraints of a problem.
Crosscutting Concepts
  • There are no Crosscutting Concepts linked to this standard.
