Plan and conduct an investigation to determine the connections between weather and water processes in Earth systems.

Clarification statement: Emphasis should be on the processes that connect the water cycle and weather patterns.

Note: this is a NYSED-specific performance expectation that is different from the Next Generation Science Standards.

Performance Level Descriptions

Every Grade 5 Science Test question on 3-ESS2-3 is written to match one of the performance level descriptions (PLDs) below.

Level 1: Using the results of an investigation, determine a cause and effect relationship between weather and a water process in Earth systems. Spring 2026 · Q24
Level 2: Conduct an investigation to determine the cause and effect relationships between weather and a water process in Earth systems.
Level 3: Plan and conduct an investigation to determine the connections between weather and water processes in Earth systems.
Level 4: Plan and conduct an investigation to determine the cause and effect relationships between weather and water processes in Earth systems and make a prediction about what would happen if one of the variables changes within the investigation.
