Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several design solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.
Performance Level Descriptions
PLDs communicate the knowledge and skills expected of students to demonstrate proficiency in each Learning Standard. NYS assessments classify student performance into one of five levels.
Resources
Examples and discussion of resources for the learning, teaching, and assessment of MS-ETS1-3.

Assessment
What assessment of MS-ETS1-3 might look like on a NY state exam.

NGSS Dimensions
Performance expectation MS-ETS1-3 was developed using the following elements from the NRC document A Framework for K-12 Science Education:
- Analyzing and Interpreting Data
- Analyze and interpret data to determine similarities and differences in findings.
- ETS1.B: Developing Possible Solutions
- There are systematic processes for evaluating solutions with respect to how well they meet the criteria and constraints of a problem.
- Sometimes parts of different solutions can be combined to create a solution that is better than any of its predecessors.
- ETS1.C: Optimizing the Design Solution
- Although one design may not perform the best across all criteria, identifying the characteristics of the design that performed the best for each criterion is useful for informing an improved design.
- The iterative process of testing the most promising solutions and modifying what is proposed on the basis of the test results leads to greater success.
- There are no Crosscutting Concepts linked to this standard.
Connections to Other Standards
MS-ETS1-3 connections to ELA, math, and other science standards as outlined by the NYS Education Department:
