The world map marks prominent hotspots with dots, including Hawaii, Yellowstone, Iceland, the Galapagos, Easter Island, the Azores, the Canary Islands, Afar and Reunion Island, and draws the approximate plate boundaries as lines. Some hotspots, such as Iceland and the Azores, lie on a plate boundary, while others, such as Hawaii and Yellowstone, lie in the interior of a plate. The map is meant to be used together with the [[Global Tectonic Activity of the Last One Million Years]] map.

Locations of Selected Hotspots from the Earth and Space Sciences Reference Tables (ESSRT): world map of approximate plate boundaries with dots for prominent hotspots such as Hawaii, Yellowstone, Iceland and the Galapagos

What the hotspots map shows

The world map marks prominent hotspots with dots, including Hawaii, Yellowstone, Iceland, the Galapagos, Easter Island, the Azores, the Canary Islands, Afar and Reunion Island, and draws the approximate plate boundaries as lines. Some hotspots, such as Iceland and the Azores, lie on a plate boundary, while others, such as Hawaii and Yellowstone, lie in the interior of a plate. The map is meant to be used together with the Global Tectonic Activity of the Last One Million Years map.
