  • variable
From released test questions
Implied by this standard
  • independent and dependent variables – implied by "fair tests in which variables are controlled"

Performance Level Descriptions

Every Grade 5 Science Test question on 3-5-ETS1-3 is written to match one of the performance level descriptions (PLDs) below.

Level 1: Given the data from an investigation in which variables were controlled and failure points were considered, identify one aspect of a model or prototype, from those provided, that can be improved. Spring 2025 Question 35
Level 2: Given the procedure for an investigation in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered, carry out fair tests to identify one aspect of a simple model or prototype that can be improved.
Level 3: Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.
Level 4: Plan and carry out multiple fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved and use data to justify the aspects needing improvement.
