Develop a model to describe that some young plants and animals are similar to, but not exactly like, their parents.

Clarification statement: Emphasis is on observation and pictorial representations of familiar plants and animals.

Note: this is a NYSED-specific performance expectation that is different from the Next Generation Science Standards.

NGSS Dimensions

Performance expectation P-LS3-1 was developed using the following elements from the NRC document A Framework for K-12 Science Education:

Science and Engineering Practices
  • Developing and Using Models
    • Compare models to identify common features and differences.
    • Develop a simple model based on evidence to represent a proposed object or tool.
Disciplinary Core Ideas
  • LS3.A: Inheritance of Traits
    • (NYSED) Some young animals are similar to, but not exactly, like their parents. Some young plants are also similar to, but not exactly, like their parents.
  • LS3.B: Variation of Traits
    • Individuals of the same kind of plant or animal are recognizable as similar but can also vary in many ways.
Crosscutting Concepts
  • Patterns
    • Patterns in the natural and human designed world can be observed and used as evidence.

Connections to Other Standards

P-LS3-1 connections to ELA, math, and other science standards as outlined by the NYS Education Department:
