The Series Circuits box from the Reference Tables for Physical Science: Physics (2025 Edition) gives the three rules for components connected in series. It primarily supports HS-PS3-6, together with the Electricity equations and the Parallel Circuits box.

Series Circuits from the Physics Reference Tables (2025 Edition)

What the series circuits box shows

In a series circuit there is one path for the current, so the current is the same through every component; the potential difference of the source is shared, so the potential differences across the components add up to it; and the equivalent resistance is the sum of the resistances, so adding a resistor in series raises the total resistance and lowers the current. With V = IR these rules give the current and the potential difference across each component.

Rows

A link or an {{Rt}} chip (Template:Rt) can point at one equation or constant with these anchors; each one lands on the table above:

  • series-current – I = I1 = I2 = …
  • series-voltage – V = V1 + V2 + …
  • series-resistance – Req = R1 + R2 + …
