Support an argument that the gravitational force exerted by Earth on objects is directed down.

Clarification statement: “Down” is a local description of the direction that points toward the center of the spherical Earth.

Assessment boundary: Assessment does not include mathematical representation of gravitational force.

Performance Level Descriptions

Every Grade 5 Science Test question on 5-PS2-1 is written to match one of the performance level descriptions (PLDs) below.

Level 1: Identify the argument, based on given evidence, that supports gravitational force exerted by Earth causes objects to be directed downward.
Level 2: Identify the evidence that supports an argument that the gravitational force exerted by Earth causes objects to be directed downward.
Level 3: Support an argument that the gravitational force exerted by Earth on objects is directed down.
Level 4: Using multiple sources of evidence, construct an argument that the gravitational force exerted by Earth causes objects to be directed downward.
