Make observations to provide evidence that energy is conserved as it is transferred and/or converted from one form to another.

Clarification statement: Examples of forms of energy could include sound, light, heat, and electrical.

Assessment boundary: Assessment does not include quantitative measurements of energy.

Performance Level Descriptions

Every Grade 5 Science Test question on 4-PS3-2 is written to match one of the performance level descriptions (PLDs) below.

Level 1: Given observations, identify an energy transfer and/or conversion from one form to another. Spring 2026 · Q15 Spring 2026 · Q35 Spring 2025 · Q36 Spring 2024 · Q7
Level 2: Given observations, identify the evidence that energy is conserved as it is transferred and/or converted from one form to another.
Level 3: Make observations to provide evidence that energy is conserved as it is transferred and/or converted from one form to another.
Level 4: Design an investigation and make observations to produce data to serve as the basis for evidence for an explanation that energy is conserved as it is transferred and/or converted from one form to another.
