Make observations and/or measurements to provide evidence of the effects of weathering or the rate of erosion by water, ice, wind, or vegetation.

Clarification statement: Examples of variables to test could include angle of slope in the downhill movement of water and/or loose Earth materials due to gravity, amount of vegetation, speed of wind, relative rate of deposition, cycles of freezing and thawing of water, cycles of heating and cooling, and volume of water flow.

Assessment boundary: Assessment is limited to a single form of weathering or erosion.

Performance Level Descriptions

Every Grade 5 Science Test question on 4-ESS2-1 is written to match one of the performance level descriptions (PLDs) below.

Level 1: Identify one effect of weathering or erosion by water, ice, wind, or vegetation, from those given, based on an observation. Spring 2024 · Q14
Level 2: Identify the observation and/or measurement, from those given, that provides evidence of the effects of weathering or erosion by water, ice, wind or vegetation.
Level 3: Make observations and/or measurements to provide evidence of the effects of weathering or the rate of erosion caused by water, ice, wind or vegetation.
Level 4: Make observations and/or measurements to identify patterns that provide evidence of the effects of weathering and the rate of erosion caused by water, ice, wind and vegetation.
