Patterns on the map mark the geologic age of the bedrock at the surface, and the key gives the rock types for each age: from Mesoproterozoic gneisses, quartzites, marbles and anorthositic rocks (the oldest, in the Adirondack region) through Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Pennsylvanian and Triassic–Jurassic rocks to the weakly consolidated Cretaceous-to-Pleistocene gravels, sands and clays of Long Island. The key also groups the units by origin: dominantly sedimentary, dominantly metamorphosed and intensely metamorphosed rocks. Cities, rivers, lakes, lines of latitude and longitude and a scale in miles and kilometers make it possible to find the bedrock at any location in the state.

The Generalized Surface Bedrock Geology of New York State map from the Reference Tables for Earth and Space Sciences (ESSRT) shows the geologic age and rock types of the bedrock at the surface across New York State. It primarily supports HS-ESS2-1.

Generalized Surface Bedrock Geology of New York State from the Earth and Space Sciences Reference Tables (ESSRT): map of New York State with bedrock patterned by geologic age, a key of rock types, cities, rivers and a scale in miles and kilometers

What the bedrock geology map shows
