The Selected Metric Prefixes table from the Reference Tables for Physical Science: Chemistry (2025 Edition) gives the four prefixes used on the exam with their symbols and factors. It is needed whenever a question's quantities and the equation's units do not match: nanometer wavelengths on The Electromagnetic Spectrum (HS-PS4-4), kilogram masses and kilojoule energies in heat calculations (HS-PS3-1), milliliter volumes in molarity calculations (HS-PS1-10) and kilopascal pressures (HS-PS1-9).

Name Symbol Factor
kilo– k 103
milli– m 10−3
micro– μ 10−6
nano– n 10−9

What the prefixes table shows

A prefix multiplies the unit it is attached to by the factor in the table: 1 kg = 103 g, 1 mL = 10−3 L, 1 μg = 10−6 g, 1 nm = 10−9 m. The 2011 edition's Table C also listed deci-, centi- and pico-; the 2025 edition keeps only these four.
